چکیده

We investigate the process of galaxy formation as can be observed in the only currently forming galaxies – the so-called Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, hereafter TDGs – through observations of the molecular gas detected via its CO (Carbon Monoxide) emission. Molecular gas is a key element in the galaxy formation process, providing the link between a cloud of gas and a bona fide galaxy. We have now detected CO in 9 TDGs with an overall detection rate of 80%, showing that molecular gas is abundant in TDGs, up to a few 10M⊙. The CO emission coincides both spatially and kinematically with the HI emission, indicating that the molecular gas forms from the atomic hydrogen where the HI column density is high. A possible trend of more evolved TDGs having greater molecular gas masses is observed, in accord with the transformation of HI into H2. Although uncertainties are still large for individual objects as the geometry is unknown, we find that the “dynamical” masses of TDGs, estimated from the CO line widths, do not seem to be greater than the “visible” masses (HI + H2 + a stellar component), i.e., TDGs require no dark matter. We provide evidence that TDGs are self-gravitating entities, implying that we are witnessing the ensemble of processes in galaxy formation: concentration of large amounts of gas in a bound object, condensation of the gas, which is atomic at this point, to form molecular gas and the subsequent star formation from the dense molecular component.

Formation of Molecular Gas in the debris of violent Galaxy Interactions

In many gravitational interactions between galaxies, gas and stars that have been torn from either or both of the precursor galaxies can collect in ’tidal tails’. Star formation begins anew in these regions to produce ’tidal dwarf galaxies’ [1] [2] [3] [4], giving insight into the process of galaxy formation through the well-defined timescale of the interaction. But tracking the star formation ...

Abundant Molecular Gas in Tidal Dwarf Galaxies: On-going Galaxy Formation

We investigate the process of galaxy formation as can be observed in the only currently forming galaxies – the so-called Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, hereafter TDGs – through observations of the molecular gas detected via its CO (Carbon Monoxide) emission. These objects are formed of material torn off of the outer parts of a spiral disk due to tidal forces in a collision between two massive galaxies. ...

Dwarf galaxy formation induced by galaxy interactions

Growing evidence has been accumulated for that some gas-rich dwarf galaxies are formed from material liberated by galaxy collisions and/or mergers. Also, gas-poor dwarf elliptical galaxies are often found in the central regions of clusters of galaxies. These observations suggest strongly that the formation of most dwarf galaxies is linked to galaxy interactions. Therefore, now seems like the ri...

Roche Lobe Overflow from Dwarf Stellar Systems

We examine the evolution of residual gas within tidally-limited dwarf galaxies and globular clusters. In systems where the gas sound speed exceeds about 10% of the central velocity dispersion, hydrostatic equilibrium causes the gas to have significant density at the tidal radius. In contrast to the stellar component, gas particles relax rapidly in response to mass loss. Gas lost through the Lag...

Models of Dwarf Galaxy Destruction 1. Destruction Mechanisms

Dwarf galaxies might be destroyed either by internal processes , such as gas loss induced by star formation, or external processes, such as tidal disruption. It is hard to see how gas loss or stellar mass loss can disrupt a galaxy dominated by dark matter. Recent modeling of the tidal destruction of dwarf spheroidal galaxies around the Milky Way has concentrated on what the dwarf would look lik...
